  • Event: Bengt Washburn at Capitol City Comedy Club, Sat, Sep 4 8:00p - Oh, sure, you can feel free to sit there and try to make jokes about Bengt (pronounced “bent”) Washburn’s name, but please keep in mind that on his worst day, Washburn is probably far funnier than you are on your best day--especially when it comes to his given name. For one immediate example, look no further than his web site URL (www.GetBengt.com). Plus, he’s been thinking about this topic years--decades--longer than you have, and even if he didn’t have that huge head start, Washburn has significant credentials establishing him as A Very Funny Guy. Heck, in 2001, he won the San Francisco Comedy Competition, a prestigious contest with a long and impressive history; some past winners range from Dana Carvey to Jake Johannsen to Doug Stanhope. Not bad. He’s fared well in other notable comedy competitions, he’s done a slew of corporate performances and he otherwise criss-crosses the country, appearing at the nation's top comedy clubs--including, this week, Cap City. He certainly brings an unusual background and perspective to the stage--in his younger years, he was a Mormon missionary, and he also holds a masters degree in painting--but, still, please don’t even think about commenting on his “bengt” comedy or sense of humor. How many times do you think he’s heard that sort of wordplay just today? Right, so let him handle the jokes at Cap City, and you’ll be damn glad you did. With Bryan Gutmann

  • Event: John Ramsey at Capitol City Comedy Club, Thu, Sep 9 8:00p - From John: IJM is a non-profit organization with offices around the world that work with local attorneys, social workers and criminal investigators to rescue and restore victims of various forms of severe injustice including slavery, police brutality and child rape. In Nairobi, I'll be assisting local attorneys in their efforts to free innocent and unindicted men and women who sit in harsh Kenyan prisons. We will also provide representation for children who have been raped as we work with local authorities to arrest and convict the childrens rapists. Anna, my wife, is a nurse and will be working at New Life Home Trust, a home for abandoned infants, many of whom were born with HIV (www.newlifehometrust.org). We need all the help we can get. And, I am putting on three benefit shows (Houston, Austin and San Antonio) in hopes of raising funds for our mission. Please come be a part. We would be extremely grateful. With John's Austin friends
  • Event: Patrice O'Neal at Capitol City Comedy Club, Fri, Sep 10 8:00p - Patrice got his first real taste of stand-up at a place called Estelle's in Boston. He was heckling a comic, and the comic suggested maybe Patrice thought he could do better. Patrice did and the following week he went on stage at Estelle's and brought down the house. From there he went on to work at the Comedy Connection, then moved to working at most of the clubs in and around Boston, New England, and New York. Now, years later, Patrice has a wide range of comic tools In one bit, Patrice, at 6'5'' and 300+ lbs., makes the audience hear and almost see the story of the eastern European gymnast quietly speaking of her difficult upbringing and training. The Boston Globe said, "It is a hilarious piece made all the more so by the contradiction between Oneal's very visible presence and that of the young white girl he is playing." Asked to whom he aspires, Patrice mentions only two names: George Carlin and Richard Pryor. Carlin for his distinct point of view and universal appeal; Pryor for his honesty, vulnerability and Personal revelation. Patrice has appeared on "The Late Show with Conan O'Brien" three times and was a regular on the very popular, Comedy Central's “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn”. He has also performed stand-up at both the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs and the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. Additionally Patrice has Guest Starred on numerous Television Shows including FOX’s critically acclaimed “Arrested Development” and NBC’s “The Office”. He was also a series regular on FOX’s drama, “The Jury”. You can hear him voicing the animated shows “Shorties Watchin’ Shorties” on Comedy Central and “O’Grady High” on “Noggin”. Catch Patrice in the films "The 25th Hour" directed by Spike Lee, "In The Cut" with Meg Ryan and "Head Of State" with Chris Rock. Patrice has also performed half hour specials on both Showtime and Comedy Central. Be sure to check out Patrice in his latest special, his own HBO “One Night Stand” half hour special airing late this summer. “If I had to pick a breakout star of the future, I’d put my money on Patrice O’Neal… Hilarious…Perfect timing.” -Boston Phoenix “Patrice O’Neal is killing. The packed house at the US Comedy Arts Festival is rolling with laughter as O’Neal punctuates the smoky air inside Aspen Sports Club with a delivery crisp and clear as the Rocky Mountains just beyond the door.” - Michael Blowen, The Boston Globe “O’Neal, like Michael Jordan draining a series of three point shots, is in the zone…the customers whoop and holler!” -Boston Magazine With Nick Mullen

  • Event: Joe Rogan at Capitol City Comedy Club, Tue, Sep 14 8:00p - It’s a measure of how successful Joe Rogan has been on television--and for how long--that many folks who could reasonably claim to be his fans are often surprised to learn that he’s a stand-up comedian, much less a highly experienced, enormously accomplished one. Somewhat odd and mystifying at first glance, this scenario actually makes quite a bit of sense upon closer inspection: Stretching all the way back to 1995, Rogan became a weekly presence on primetime network TV, on the NBC sitcom “NewsRadio,” portraying Joe Garelli. That series aired on NBC for five years (and lives on in syndication), but this obviously involved Joe acting, so while his was a funny character on a funny show, his work there didn’t necessarily suggest his stand-up background. For the better part of a half-dozen years, he presided over NBC’s “Fear Factor,” in which he fulfilled the role of host--and could certainly be more himself. But, again, his work there didn’t really telegraph that he was a veteran comic, and didn’t begin to indicate that, when operating in his comedian guise, the act tends to be dark, edgy, provocative, sometimes explicit and blue, and never for prudes or the faint-hearted. But he’s a skillful, powerful purveyor of no-holds barred comedy, with credits ranging from multiple appearances on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” to multiple visits to “Howard Stern” to co-hosting the second generation version of “The Man Show.” Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Joe not on TV in your living room, but up close and personal in the cozy confines of Cap City.
  • Event: J.R. Brow at Capitol City Comedy Club, Wed, Sep 15 8:00p - J.R. Brow is a talented bunch of guys. You want stand-up? Of course, he’s got that covered. You want music, with a comedy spin? He does that really well. You want impressions? He’s a hotshot at those, too (Does the cast of Mayberry aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise ring a bell? How ‘bout Cheech? Granny from “The Beverly Hillbillies”?) You want improvisation--maybe you’d like to see him combine a couple of these elements? No problem. J.R. is nothing if not versatile--he’s flexible, he’s fast, he’s funny. And his multiple gifts have been recognized with bookings on such television shows as NBC’s “Comedy Showcase,” ABC’s “America’s Funniest People,” and the Fox Family network’s “Show Me The Funny.” With Margaret Smith
